What are RCDs?

Worksafe (2017) explains that “An RCD, or residual current device, is a life-saving device which is designed to prevent you from getting a fatal electric shock if you touch something live”. Pretty clever and important stuff!! These things are literally lifesavers for your family.

How does an RCD work?

An RCD works by constantly monitoring the circuit to ensure there are no earth faults (e.g. due to a faulty appliance, cutting through cable during DIY or old loose wiring etc). If you happen to touch a live cable during an earth fault, the RCD will then switch off your electricity automatically. Potentially preventing an electric shock. Under fault conditions, an RCD should trip in under 0.4s. This could be the difference between life and death.

Why are RCDs so important?

RCD’s are so important because they can literally save your life. They can also reduce the likelihood of a fire in your home too. How do I know if I have them?

Head along to your switchboard and have a look, RCDs have a button on with either a T or Test. See the picture down below if you are unsure.

Should I test them?

RCDs should be checked at least twice a year- the easiest way to remember to do this is to always test when the clocks change. They ideally should be checked every three months, this is really easy to do.
